3 Days of Design 2017

The Copenhagen showroom was humming with activity last week when Dinesen opened the doors to celebrate 3 Days of Design 2017. A huge trunk from a 111-year-old Douglas tree provided visitors with a unique illustration of the journey of the wood from forest to design, while talented guest exhibitors showcased their creative creations made with wood from the 119-year-old family company.

Furniture from Design Studies by Dinesen Wood

The Danish design duo Design Studies launched their new furniture series ‘The Dinesen Collection’ during 3 Days of Design. A collection of furniture made as a celebration to the beauty of Dinesen wood.

The temporary ‘From forest to design’ exhibition was focused around a single 3-metre-long Douglas trunk, set up to highlight the craftsmanship and passion behind Dinesen’s unique planks. The remarkable tree transitioned from its pure natural form of a tree trunk into to wide Douglas planks. The contrast between the raw trunk and the finished planks created an impactful visual illustration of Dinesen’s commitment to using only the finest of trees.

With the exhibition, Dinesen sought to communicate the story about the origins of the raw wood sourced from the best European forests, which have been carefully tended to and looked after for generations. A portrait of the close attention that has been paid to the quality of the floor from the moment the raw material is felled in the woods until the floor planks are finally delivered to the client.

Becoming a design element

When the planks leave Dinesen’s production facilities in Jels in the Southern part of Denmark, they are ready for the final transformation by architects and designers. At this point, the planks enter a world of bespoke solutions, turning into design elements, where only the size and shape of nature itself set the limit.

The possibilities that arise when Dinesen’s knowledge of wood is combined with the insight into design and aesthetics provided by designers and architects were visualized at the Dinesen Showroom with creative creations from talented guest exhibitors.

The Norwegian artist, architect and designer Tron Meyer presented his ‘Foursquare Staircase’ built from solid Dinesen Oak. A remarkable staircase designed with a geometry based upon four spirals that are combined to form a continuous movement.

Furthermore, the Danish design duo Design Studies launched their new furniture series ‘The Dinesen Collection’. A collection of furniture made as a celebration to the beauty of Dinesen wood, with a monumental yet subtle design that highlights the different facets of Douglas and Oak.
